Puerto Perez
On the shores of Titicaca, a new city with an ancient history
The municipality is named after General Juan José Pérez, who died in 1880 during the War of the Pacific, between Chile and a Bolivian-Peruvian alliance.
The foundation of the town of Puerto Pérez is relatively recent, as it dates back to the early years of the Republic of Bolivia, in around 1870, when the place was chosen as a docking point for Peruvian steamships crossing the lake.
But the history of the people who inhabited these lands is much older, as testified by the numerous pre-Hispanic settlements scattered around the municipality and the pieces exhibited in the museums of the area.
