A national archaeological monument since 1937, the Qala Uta site is one of the best examples of funerary architecture of the pre-Hispanic cultures.
Qala Uta is an exceptional archaeological site, with examples of well-preserved chullpares and wonderful views of Lake Titicaca.
The archaeological site of Qala Uta (which literally means “stone house”) is a unique site for its architecture. Considered a sacred site, it preserves the remains of important personalities, community leaders and priests, laid to rest in the funerary towers, which are between five to eight meters tall, known as chullpas, built by the Chiripa and Tiwanaku cultures. Remains of clothing, food and tools have been found inside the towers because, according to the villagers, the deceased should not lack anything in their life after death.
The Qala Uta archaeological site occupies an area of about one square kilometer and the chullpas stand on an artificial terrace. The site is located close to the Quehuaya community and from there you can see the shores of the immense Lake Titicaca, undoubtedly a unique viewing point of incomparable scenic beauty.
Due to its importance the site was declared a National Archaeological Monument in 1937.
The archaeological site of Qala Uta is a place where you can be inspired by the spirit and energy of ancient cultures. We are looking forward to accompanying you to discover this site and many others on the shores of Lake Titicaca: contact us for more information.
