A good option for travellers who don’t just want a room to sleep in but are looking to get to know the members of the community.
Amidst mountains and enchanting views, the hostel offers a unique stay in a rustic building inspired by the age-old traditional folk architecture.
The Alcaya Lodge is located near the same-named archaeological site and is run by members of the community. The main characteristic of the building is its dome or oven-shaped design, and its construction technique is known as Lak´a uta, which means “home of earth”; in fact, the sloping roof, made of adobe (mud) and straw, forms a perfect curved line with the walls, giving each building a pleasant welcome feeling. Each block has large windows that let light into every room, creating a contrast between the traditional forms of these structures and their modern-day functionality. The units that make up the lodge, which can accommodate over 20 guests, consist of two rooms with en-suite bathrooms.
The dining room is located in the middle: here you can taste the authentic flavours of Andean cuisine, with typical dishes based on quinoa, which is almost always on the menu. Another typical dish served here is roast llama accompanied by quinoa and local potatoes.
The warm treatment of the community members will make you feel at home at all times, from the early hours of the day, which begin with a hearty breakfast, to the daily activities the families engage in, such as farming and growing quinoa and vegetables.
To experience authentic community tourism and share in the life of the people who live in this corner of Bolivia is simple: contact us and we will help you organise your stay at the Alcaya community hostel.
