A UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 1977, the natural area of Apolobamba is surprising for its great variety of habitats and ecosystems.
The ideal destination for nature and adventure lovers: unique Andean landscapes, thousands of native species and the possibility of practicing different mountain activities make this Bolivian natural area a must-see destination.
The natural area of Apolobamba is a protected area not far from the city of La Paz, a place full of unique views between the provinces of Bautista Saavedra, Franz Tamayo and Larecaja.
One of the exceptional aspects of the reserve is the presence of three ecological levels, from the high Andes to the band of humid mountain forests of the Yungas: the biodiversity of Apolobamba is remarkable. There are an estimated 1500 plant species and a wide variety of fauna. The vicuña, the spectacled bear, which here is called jucumari, the deer and the Andean mountain cat, are just some of the animals that can be found in the humid forests, while the upper reaches of the mountain range is where the emblematic condor, the most representative species of the entire Andean chain, nests.
