In the quiet plain at the foot of Nevado Sajama there is an impressive expanse of water. Lagoon Wañaquta reflects the blue skies, which seem very close here.
A perfect destination for a pleasant day trip just a few kilometres from the famous Mount Sajama.
In the Andean mountain range, high-altitude lakes play a fundamental role in environmental balance: they ensure the presence of plants and animal life and sustain the human settlements.
The lake called Wañaquta or Huayñacota remains a fundamental source of water supply for the communities that live in the area of the Sajama National Park.
The lake is located on the slope of the Sajama, which feeds it with water when the snow thaws. This explains why its water level is variable and can appear completely frozen over or almost dried up at different times of the year. In addition to the magnificent scenery, with unique views of the Sajama and other tall surrounding mountains, the main attraction for those who visit Lake Wañaquta are the many local and migratory birds attracted by the wealth of plants, insects, amphibians and fish that populate it and the possibility of resting during long journeys. In the rainy season you may come across large flocks of Andean flamingos and specimens of the less common horned coot; with their harmonious flight they contribute to the extraordinary beauty of the place.
During the ascent to Sajama, intrepid visitors encounter other small mountain lakes, such as Khasiti, Soropata and Chiar Khota, at altitudes of 4,820, 4,900 and 4,960 metres, respectively. Here you can easily find llamas, alpacas, and even vicunas, which come here to drink. With a little luck, you might also see the suri and quirquincho, endangered species which have made the tall Andes their habitat.
