The pre-Hispanic bridge of Cumana is an ancient stone structure on the Qhapaq Ñan the famous pre-Hispanic road network.
Crossing the bridge affords marvellous views over the majestic Lake Titicaca, with glimpses of the typical flora and fauna of the Bolivian highlands.
Today, the Cumana Bridge connects the communities of Belén Yayes and Cumana and this well-preserved pre-Hispanic building is still of great importance to the communities, both for its historical value and as a communication infrastructure. It is approximately 520 metres long and 4 metres wide and features a stone and earth embankment. The road was built by the Tiwanacota community that settled around Lake Titicaca.
Marshal Antonio José de Sucre, one of the key figures of Bolivian history, crossed this bridge when he camped his troops here and gave the place its current name of Cumana, due to the similarity of the landscape with his homeland in Venezuela.
Today, the bridge is a gateway to several communities and archaeological sites of great cultural importance, as of yet little explored places waiting to be discovered.
