A network of footpaths links the villages of Ispaya Grande, Qhirihuate, Sisasani y Santiago de Okola
The network of footpaths is part of the Qhapaq Ñan in Bolivia, the huge pre-Hispanic road system that united the peoples of South America, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
These paths form a communication network that arose in Tiwanaku times and were then rebuilt by the Incas across the Andean region. In the highlands, near the Bolivian shores of Lake Titicaca, this section of the network, featuring paths one to two meters wide, links four communities: Ispaya Grande, Quirihuate, Sisasani and Santiago de Okola, all belonging to the department of La Paz.
Travellers along the pre-Hispanic Qhapaq Ñan can see many agricultural terraces, a common feature of the Andean landscape. Built on the slopes, to make the most of the scarce arable land in a difficult area farming, they are used today by the local inhabitants as pastures for livestock, while the road continues to play a central role in connecting the communities.
One of the most exciting moments on this section of the Qhapaq Ñan road network is arriving at the Ispaya Grande panoramic viewpoint. Here the view over the majestic Lake Titicaca is unforgettable and, with a little luck, you can also see wild animals typical of the area, such as the viscachas, large rodents similar to rabbits that lives in these mountains.
Travelling on the Bolivian section of the Qhapaq Ñan is an opportunity to enjoy unique landscapes of rugged beauty, alongs trails that have witnessed thousands of years of history unfold. It is, perhaps, the best way to really get to know and understand the character of this country, which is still reflected in its tall mountains and lake.
