Tucked away in the snow-capped mountains of the Cordillera Real, at an elevation of 4,000 metres, the Luru Kheri Lagoon has given rise to numerous legends.
The Luru Kheri lagoon is an ideal stop, of breathtaking beauty, for all travellers along the pre-Columbian Qhapaq Ñan route.
The Luru Kheri lagoon is located on the section of the pre-Columbian Qhapaq Ñan road network known as the Takesi route. The name of the lagoon probably comes from the Aymara word Loroqueri, which means "the noise of water", being a reference to the sound of the gentle waves lapping against the pebbles on the shore. Its crystal-clear waters amaze the hikers who visit this region. It is no surprise that such an extraordinary landscape has given rise to numerous legends.
One of the most curious is that the lagoon rose overnight where before there was only a swamp. The locals say that the lagoon gave rise to many a misfortune: it made the children of the community sick and the mule drivers who happened to spend the night there drowned in its waters. Rituals and sacrifices were therefore practiced to appease the forces that dwelt in the lagoon and so put an end to these dreadful events, the locals say.
The point on the Takesi Trail where the Luru Kheri Lagoon is located is a marvellous scenic spot and one of the best places for taking photographs and watching the birds that live in the area. The surroundings of the lagoon are home to many endemic species, including the viscacha, an Andean rodent that finds shelter in the rocky ravines.
These expanses of water are key to the survival of the fauna that inhabits the Andes mountain ecosystems and locations with mystical and religious significance for the local populations, which have identified these wonderful landscapes with the very image of Mother Earth.
