Colours and folklore are the key features of the feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, patron saint of the nation and the armed forces.
A celebration in which everyone in Luribay shows strong religious devotion and attachment to the homeland.
The feast day of the patron saint of Luribay is celebrated every 15 and 16 July, in the main square of the town.
These celebrations are particularly important to the community because of their religious and patriotic significance. In fact, the dates coincide with both the celebration of the patroness of Bolivia, the Virgin of Mount Carmel, and the commemoration of the La Paz Revolution. The latter event is celebrated in Luribay with a parade, attended by the local authorities, schools, unions, businesses and residents.
The two-day festival is very popular with the population, who take part with great enthusiasm.
The festivities begin on the evening of July 15, with an evocative procession of torches and lanterns attended by the local authorities. A fascinating event, a time of coming together and celebration for the entire community.
The following morning another procession takes place, attended by many residents, which makes its way to the main square of Luribay. Here, around noon, a mass is celebrated in the colonial church of the Virgin of Mount Carmel, which continues with a procession around the square. The culmination of the festivities comes with performances by moseñada groups, one of the characteristic dances of Luribay and much of Bolivia. Members of the Luribay community participate while the bands play the tarqueada, creating a spectacle and an atmosphere that cannot be missed.
