Prepare to encounter typical Andean wildlife in and around the ruins of the ghost town of San Antonio.
Viscachas, vicunas and Andean foxes are just a few of the amazing wildlife that visitors can find in these places.
Viscachas are curious rodents characterised by their soft and abundant fur, which is absolutely necessary to protect themselves from the very harsh climate of the region. Like all rodents, viscachas are mostly nocturnal animals; dawn and dusk – when they come out of their burrows to look for food – are the best times to spot them. Although these animals abound around the ghost town of San Antonio de Lípez, it is not always easy to spot them: due to the grey-white colour of their fur, which blends in with the colours of the land, it can be difficult to spot them.
On the highlands bordering the community live the vicunas, one of the most elegant and popular animal species in the Andean regions. These camelids are characterized by a long, thin neck and expressive large eyes.
With a bit of luck you can also come across Andean foxes. This endemic species, still present in many areas of Bolivia, populates the mountainous areas and brackish lakes of the highlands.
