A small rural church contains within its simple walls the history and faith of generations of inhabitants of Santiago de Agencha.
With its typically colonial architecture, the church of Santiago de Agencha is undoubtedly the most characteristic building in the small town.
The local church, dedicated to the apostle James (Santiago), is located in the main square of Santiago de Agencha; its simple bell tower is visible to travellers from a distance and the tolling of the bells marks the daily activities unfolding in the town.
Entirely made of stone, the simple church of Santiago de Agencha inspires visitors with a sense of humble spirituality.
Inside, its plain whitewashed walls are decorated with images of saints worshipped with great devotion by the locals. A barrel vault covers the entire nave.
Every 25th July, the local population celebrates Saint James and thanks him for the fruits of the earth, praying for his protection and for a good harvest.
